Conflicts between humans and birds range in scope and intensity. They vary from local conflicts such as Canada Goose depredation at an airport to significant economic loss of geese feeding on agriculture fields.
The FWS can issue depredation permits to reduce damage caused by birds or to protect human health and safety. However, these often provide short-term relief.
Depredation and control orders allow for the take of specific species for specific purposes but there are strict regulations and conditions that apply.
The FWS is exploring concepts for evaluating and responding to conflict species on regional or national scales.
The Flyways will work with the FWS as approaches to identify and help resolve conflicts are developed.
